Maternal morbidity

Is defined by the WHO maternal morbidity working group as “any health condition attributed to and/or aggravated by pregnancy and childbirth that has a negative impact on the woman’s wellbeing”. Maternal deaths have been described as the tip of the iceberg and maternal morbidity as the base. For every woman who dies of pregnancy-related causes; 20 or 30 others experience acute or chronic morbidity; often with permanent sequelae that undermine their normal functioning (www.who.int/bulletin/volumes/91/10/13-117564/en/).
